God is meddling with my money
The bible has more to say about money than any other subject. This intrigues me. Why does God want to mess with my money?
I believe God peeks over my shoulder when I’m doing my budget. This is why:
- How I use my money has direct impact on the person I am now and the person I will be in the future.
- What I do with my money impacts the lives of my family, friends, neighbors and the world I live in.
My money has impact so God meddles.Like everybody else, I’ve tried various systems to manage my money. Some work, others I find tedious and cumbersome. I don’t think the system we embrace is as important as the philosophy we embrace. Some time ago I listened to a message being preached that clearly articulated and reflected the philosophy I have embraced. Here is a summary: (with credit to the church where I heard it preached)
- Earn more – I need to work hard and not be lazy. Investing in myself by learning new skills will help me reach my full potential. God wants me to be blessed in what I do. There is nothing wrong with earning more based on my level of skill, hard work and effort.
- Consume less – Having stuff is fine. I just don’t need so much of it.
- Hoard nothing – If I have not used something in six months, it’s unlikely that I need it. Time to give it away.
- Be generous – I give joyfully, generously and regularly. In fact, this point is probably the one that reflects me most. I love to give and I love to give generously and as often as I can.
- Celebrate life – I have aspirations and dreams that I save for and work toward. I also use some of my money to enjoy life with my family and friends. Life is to be celebrated.
God is intimately interested in how I treat myself, how I treat those around me and how I treat the world I live in. Because the way I use my money has such an impact on all these areas, God meddles. (Technically, it is His stuff so He has a right to meddle.)Question: Earn more, Consume less, Hoard nothing, Be generous. Celebrate life. These are values I have embraced with regard to money. What are values you have embraced?
