The other ten commandments
We are all aware of the Ten Commandments given to Moses. They are the cornerstone, foundation and outworking of the moral law and we would do well to memorize and live by them. But ...
I don’t want to discuss those 10 commandments. I would like to share with you ten other commandments that help give me direction in life. They are found in Proverbs 3 – read the whole chapter.
- Be truthful and kind.
- Trust in the Lord with all my heart.
- Don’t assume I know it all.
- Honor the Lord with everything I own.
- Don’t resent or try and avoid God’s discipline.
- Use good judgment and common sense in all that I do.
- Do not be afraid of sudden calamities that originate from wicked people.
- Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due.
- Do not fight with people nor be a bully.
- Do not envy those who dominate others and don’t follow their example.
I must admit that I find some of them hard, like:
- Number 2: I seem to revert to trusting myself and then have to remind myself of number 3 on the list.
- Number 5: It's not that I resent it so much as that I try and avoid it - mostly after not obeying numbers 2+3.
- Number 7: I don't do particularly well with people who are manipulative so, when the fear comes, I'm back to reminding myself of number 2.
This is not to say that I have mastered all the others. It is a daily walk. But I have found that as I implement these "ten commandments", I hear God's counsel and my home is blessed."...but His secret counsel is with the upright ... and He declares blessing on the home of the just." - (Proverbs 3: 32 + 33)Question: Which on the list do you find difficult?
